INTRODUCTION: The Self-Love Series
The most important relationship is the one you have with yourself. D I A N E V O N F U R S T E N B E R G
Just in case you have forgotten today: You matter. You are loved. You are worthy. You are magical.

Your soul will never be fully nourished by anyone’s love but your own.

Don’t ever doubt your worth.

These are just 5 quotes I picked up after Googling “quotes on the self” and “quotes on self-love.” Though you may never before have come across these particular quotes (though most likely you have), I am confident that you come across quotes like this constantly as you use social media and the Internet. The message contained in these quotes is both rampant and pervasive--it has seeped into our culture to such a degree that many of us have accepted them as truth--not willingly, mind you, but due to the constant barrage of this idea.
I’m writing to help us do a double take on something that isn’t even causing us to bat an eyelash.
God commands us clearly “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2 ESV). As children of God, we truly want to do just that and yet here are just a few of many things that can stand in our way.
Laziness (because you have to read and study your Bible to “renew your mind” and “discern the will of God”).
Personality (some of us just aren’t analytical--it makes it that much harder to analyze what worldly patterns we may be conforming to).
Human Limitation (we can try to stay afloat and fight off worldly philosophies, but no matter what, we will at some point let our guard down and lies will seep through the cracks).
But that’s no reason to get discouraged!
God knows the heart of His children and how deeply we want to be pleasing to Him. He sends opportunities our way to re-learn the truth, to realign to it, to recommit to seeking it.
I hope this post can be just one of those opportunities to learn what God truly has to say about this idea of “self-love.”
My goal here is that you
ONE - Understand the underlying message of the idea of self-love.
TWO - Understand how radically different and better God’s truth about ourselves is.
THREE - Gain the tools to protect yourself against the pervasive messages constantly thrown at you.
To analyze these quotes, I’m going to share a quick tool that can help you build discernment as you seek to align your worldview as closely as possible to the Bible. I want you to ask yourself these four questions every time you encounter a message like the ones we will be looking at:
Who is speaking and on what authority?
What are they really saying?
What is my ultimate authority and how does this message align with it?
What do I believe?
I invite you to apply those questions to my post as well, as I am clearly trying to convey a message to you. And though I am no one and have no real personal authority, the authority I am claiming is that of the Bible. I hope and pray everything I say here aligns with that ultimate Authority that we all should recognize. And if it doesn't, dump what I have to say and move on!
One of the greatest services you can do for yourself is to drop any unBiblical idea like a hot potato. Move on!
Thank you for joining along on this new series. I invite you to read it consistently and prayerfully, asking God to illuminate where you have fallen into worldly patterns of thinking and to show you His truth which is good, beautiful, and always leads to greater freedom and joy.
“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31b-32).
Keep looking up,
Maria.
